5 Real and Altogether Wonderful Holiday Cottages to Stay at in Broadchurch
An idyllic market town, a close-knit community, long beaches, and striking cliffs – these are the main attractions in the fictional town of Broadchurch. Viewers of the award-winning show follow David Tenant and Olivia Colman as they play a pair of detective inspectors who are tasked with solving the murder of a local boy that shook the whole town. The show’s bleak premise unfolds with finesse and the perfect amount of dramatic tension which leaves many audiences wanting more after finishing the three volumes.
Although you may not find Broadchurch on the map, the actual filming sites for the show are real and have experienced a boost in tourism since the show’s release in 2013. The Independent reports that hotel searches have risen by 200% for Somerset and Dorset where they predominantly shot the series.
The show’s creator and writer, Chris Chibnall, grew up in West Bay, formerly Bridport Harbour, where the beach scenes were filmed. He wrote the series as an ode to his hometown, while many of the town scenes were shot in Clevedon. Entertainment Daily conveys that Chibnall’s aim was to showcase the complex spectrum of emotions which are contrasted against the landscapes of the fictional Broadchurch. If you can’t get enough of the Broadchurch fever, you can book a stay in any of these cottages located in the heart of the real Broadchurch where fans can enjoy afternoon walks along the seaside town or catch the sunset from the overlooking cliffs.
The Boardwalk
The small harbour settlement of West Bay is part of the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site that stretches for 96 miles. The Boardwalk will reward your stay with the best of both worlds as it sits close to the coastal area as well as the bustling town of Bridport. Part of Broadchurch’s influence is the abundance of local sources of meats and produce according to The Telegraph. When you’re here, make sure to partake in some of the best food in the region from hand-carved meat to the fresh catch of the day.
West Bay Cottage
Also near the lively harbour is the charming period property of West Bay Cottage. It is the perfect holiday spot with its nearby locations of pub/restaurants and cafe’s as well as views of beautiful landscapes. The interior of the cottage itself is embellished with chic yet homey decor and a log burner which can offer a much-needed respite from what can sometimes be harsh winds in the area. If you fancy a much-needed restful, catchup day indoors after a busy few days then this place offers a peaceful haven for your holiday.
Brimar
For a more secluded option, head over to Brimar for your accommodation needs. The cottage has three bedrooms and a cloakroom perfect for an extended family vacation. Hill Farm Barn
Bridport Cottages previously noted that some of the scenes of the series were filmed at Hooke Park, which is adorned with bluebells. Vibrant flora is something representative of the entirety of Dorset, considering that it is an official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in the UK, making it one of the most protected landscapes in the country. Right in the heart of Dorset AONB is the recently renovated luxury cottage Hill Farm Barn where guests can enjoy picturesque bike rides across the countryside and to the nature reserves or take care of the resident animals of the barn.
