Things to do on a Cultural Weekend in Dorset

Dorset is a gorgeous part of the country with amazing sights and interesting activities to do. If you’re heading to one of our luxury holiday cottages soon, we want you to experience some of the wonders the county has to offer.

If you’re seeking to relax and absorb as much of Dorset’s cultural scene as possible, here we’ve put together a few suggestions of things to do during your stay with us in our holiday cottages in Bridport.

Vineyard Tours at Furleigh Estate Vineyard

If you’re a wine lover, this is certainly not one to miss. Just a short drive from your holiday cottage in Bridport, the vineyard tours at Furleigh Estate tours are a perfect way to try some delicious wine as well as take in the beautiful greenery of the estate.

The Grand Tour which begins at 11am and The Classic Tour at 2.30pm take place on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the year and on Wednesdays during the summer, so whatever time of year you are visiting Dorset, you’ll be able to explore the vineyard to your heart’s content.

Most of their wines are sparkling, but also make still white, rosé and red wines with their own vineyard grapes.

Vintage Cruise and Compton Acres Joint Ticket Cruise

Bridport and wider Dorset has so much natural beauty to explore it can be hard to know where to go. If you’re hiring one of our luxury cottages for a small getaway, why not choose a Dorset cruise which will highlight the special sights that the experts define as a ‘must-see’.

If you’re keen to experience more of one of Dorset’s coastal towns, the Vintage Cruise will ensure you have a day to remember in Poole, with stops at the colourful harbours and notable sights. With the option to add a Dorset Cream Tea or Fish and Chips, you’ll be guaranteed a comforting cultural experience.

The Compton Acres Joint Ticket Cruise will provide a full day of culture, with the added opportunity to meander around one of the finest privately owned gardens in the country.

Visit Cerne Abbas

Exploring the quaint villages across Dorset will always be a cultural treat and you’re guaranteed a lovely day out. If you’re looking for a day trip during your stay at one of our holiday cottages, one of our favourite villages is Cerne Abbas, which is located about a 40-minute drive out of Bridport.

It is perhaps most famous for ‘The Giant’, a 180ft chalk carving of a figure into one of the village’s sloping hillsides. The figure is most interesting because of the speculation behind its age and origin.

You will also be able to enjoy a selection of food and drink in Cerne Abbas’ picturesque surroundings, with pubs such as The New Inn, The Giant Inn and The Royal Oak and Abbotts Tea Rooms.

Abbotsbury: Subtropical Gardens and St Catherine’s Chapel

If you travel East down the coastline from your holiday cottage, you’ll find yourself in the charming village of Abbotsbury which is home to a myriad of cultural activities to spend your time exploring.

The Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens are perfect for nature lovers. Set in a magnificent Victorian walled garden, the unique micro-climate allows topical flora and fauna to thrive; with trails all around the site, you can explore and discover new sites.

For breath taking views of Dorset’s famous coastline, head to St Catherine’s chapel. It is free entry, so take a picnic and spend the day gazing out over Chesil Beach and the Isle of Portland which can be seen in the distance.
